How do the MMR system and the ranks work in Dota 2? There are no official statements from Valve nowadays, so I made the work and researched a lot to write this long guide. There might be still mistakes or things that change over time — I will keep the post updated, comment below if something needs to be corrected! This guide is for Dota 2 beginners. For a long time, Dota 2 only had the MMR value, but brought in the ranks to give the players a stronger reference, self-fulfillment and of course a bigger reason to climb higher on the ladder! Your MMR will have a huge impact on to your game quality: The goal is to find the suitable skill rank you really have, so that Dota 2 can match you with equal skilled players into a maximum balanced game. That means MMR decides about your teammates and enemies. Most of you will have experienced that when you are playing with friends who have a completely different MMR higher or lower then the queue time is much higher. The Dota 2 algorithm has to find the right mix for a balanced and suitable game.

This change was implemented after it was found out that there were cases where three person parties had problems finding compatible players. The update also introduced the idea of Core and Support Ranks. The second was on players who were found out to have violated the Steam Service Agreement.
With the exception of bot games, matchmaking is mostly determined by Dota Plus weighting as well – I’ve heard stories of 5-stacks that will deliberately select.

Strict matchmaking is a setting that allows solo players to only queue into games against other solo players when play in ranked playlists. Players often choose to enable this kind of matchmaking to avoid loading into games with parties. In the game, parties receive bonus MMR to compensate for the coordination they receive from working together, with all skill and experience values aggregated together.
This leads to many players wanting to just play with other solo-queued grinders, due to partied players sometimes having a different level of motivation to their solo teammates. Valve believe this choice-based separation of players entering into games alone or partied up has seen a spike in matchmaking times, as well as a reduction in the overall balance of skill in games, and are testing to see if the two are linked.
I will still test it out, but I’m afraid solo queue might just be dead for me and a lot of others going forward. One group that will enjoy the change, however, is regular partied players. If matchmaking queues do rise, not many will complain about quicker queue times for the foreseeable future.

Parties of 5 will always enter the Fast Queue for free, but do not earn in enough role diversity for the matchmaking population to be healthy.
Play class-based games and you’ll know that it’s tough to convince people to play certain roles — there are only so many people who’d rather be the support character than the front line hero. Valve’s solution for Dota 2? Give players an incentive to fill those roles. Its latest update to the game adds a Fast Queue option that bumps Ranked players to the front of the line when they’re willing to play with all roles selected.
It works on a credit system that provides more Fast Queue games the more you’re willing to play any role. You get four games on top of the one you’re playing each time you play solo. Two-player parties earn two games each, while three-player teams earn a game each. Five-player stacks will always enter the Fast Queue, but they won’t earn future credits.
Dota 2 fans not pleased with optional strict solo queue
With the new ranked season ongoing, this is great news for those who have noted several aspects of the current matchmaking system that have caused issues. Valve also stated that whatever changes are in the works will be ready later this week. We are working on a few fixes to improve matchmaking quality and expect to have it out later this coming week.
The main issues of the current matchmaking system included half stacked players constantly being forced to play against five stacked teams, which would lead to one-sided matches.
Strict solo queues were introduced to help individual players without parties get into better games. In theory, this would make the teams more even and the game more fair, since both sides would have a similar lack of planned coordination. This was seen as very important, since many solo players ended up playing against coordinated teams who were trying their best to win thanks to their Matchmaking Rankings bonus.
Meanwhile, the solo player’s team may not have been as competitive. But now Valve believes this implementation has created unbalanced matches since the number of solo queue players may not be high at certain ranks. This caused higher ranked players to often be paired with inexperienced players with lower rankings. This change had an initially negative response from the Dota 2 community.
Many felt that turning off strict solo queue would run players the risk of facing heavy stacks while they themselves would have random players on their team, many of whom may not even be using a microphone. In a game that requires a lot of teamwork, this possiblity can seem dire. Players who choose to play alone when their friends aren’t online also found this concerning.
Many players on Reddit, for example, felt that they could end up with a team in which their teammates are ignoring them while talking privately together in a separate Discord chat.
Dota Seasonal Rank distribution and Medals – July 2020
Earlier this month, Valve made some big Dota 2 matchmaking changes and introduced the Fast Queue system to alleviate the increasing queue times players have been suffering from. For the most part, it looks like the Fast Queue system is working extremely in Ranked matchmaking. Valve shared some interesting details about how the Dota 2 matchmaking is going right now.
First up, the developer explained that for solo players who queue for just the Mid role in the Fast Queue, the average search time is 2 minutes and 30 seconds. However, there are still 2. On average, players in the Fast Queue for Ranked Dota 2 matchmaking, according to Valve, has an average wait time of 1 minute and 20 seconds to find a match.

The players already have a level playing ground because either side can get matched with and against teams – and when one side has a team, the other side has a similar team. This would of course also increase solo queue times, again leading to even more forum whining. But you know what? This is actually entirely false – the developers have repeatedly stated that the game is intended to be experienced with grouped teams.
Overwatch could do what Dota 2 does and allow solo players to choose to queue for exclusively solo matches, or to queue for either or. People can choose whether they want a longer wait for matchmaking or the possibility of playing with groups. Unfortunately people who play competitive multiplayer games are often jerks, so that option should really just be taken away by the developers.
